Stylishly At Home
By now, it’s safe to say that nearly every coffee enthusiast is familiar with Fellow. Their streamlined, modern aesthetic fits easily in any home brewing environment while looking like it was just plucked from a specialty café. Several years in the making, the Opus falls in-line with this concept, and is Fellow’s answer to the home barista searching for a true, all-in-one grinder. Sitting at a price point of only $195 and boasting numerous high-quality features like anti-static technology, tool-less calibration, and a timed auto stop function, the Fellow Opus is certainly punching well above its weight.
A Look Inside
The Opus utilizes Fellow’s C6-40 Burly Burrs™: a six-blade, 40mm stainless steel, conical burr system as opposed to the flat burrs that were found in its predecessor. When coupled with a high-torque motor that spins at only 350 RPMs, the end result is a grind that highlights the sweetness, body, and complexity of your coffee. Fellow has also integrated their anti-static technology with a direct, drop-down design from the load bin into the design of the Opus, saving precious coffee and time that might otherwise be spent cleaning up pesky, loose grounds. The on/off switch can be pressed once for 30 seconds of grinding, twice for 60 seconds, three times for 90 seconds, or press and hold for two minutes of continuous grinding.
True Multi-Functionality
One of the biggest draws to Fellow’s Opus is its ability to grind fine enough for true, 9 bar espresso extractions. However, the Opus doesn’t stop there. On the outside, you’ll see a clear representation of the 41 grind settings that the Opus has to offer, which move the burrs a distance of 50 microns. Removing the hopper gives you access to the micro adjustment ring, allowing for 33 microns of burr movement. Split the difference between the two and you’re left with a 17 micron change per click. This feature makes dialing in those thick, gooey shots much more precise. And when you’ve got a new coffee that calls for a pour-over brewing method or even cold brewing, the Opus can handle that. At its price point, Fellow has delivered a true, multi-purpose grinder for the budding home barista.
